Rapid City is a city in Pennington County, South Dakota, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 59,607, but is now estimated over 70,000. Rapid City is the hub of the Black Hills. Rapid City has a metro population of about 110,000.
Rapid City the second largest city in South Dakota after Sioux Falls. Rapid City is also the principal city of and is included in the Rapid City, South Dakota Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Mt Rushmore Rapid City
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City along with National American University, Western Dakota Technical Institute, and Black Hills State University in nearby Spearfish. There are two public high schools in the city, Central High School and Stevens High School.
The major industry of Rapid City is tourism because of its close location to Mount Rushmore and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Other industries include financing corporations, state banking, agricultural investing, a cement factory,a Merillat plant that makes kitchen cabinets, Computer peripheral manufacturing and Black Hills Gold jewelry creations. Another major form of employment to be considered is Ellsworth Air Force Base, home to the 28th Bomber wing which flies B-1B long range bombers. The base is located east of Rapid City in the suburb of Box Elder.
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) was founded in 1885 as "Dakota School of Mines", primarily as an institution to teach mining engineering and related disciplines. SDSM&T is located in Rapid City, South Dakota on the north-eastern edge of the Black Hills, where students have access to year-round outdoor recreational activities. SDSM&T is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents. More than 80 percent of graduates gain real-life experience through internships and co-ops, which shows in placement rates of more than 95 percent and starting salaries after graduation averaging nearly $50,000.
The Journey Museum and Gardens (7 acres) is a historical museum, with gardens. The museum contains prehistoric and historic collections related to the Western Great Plains of the United States. Exhibits include displays of local geology, archaeology, Native American culture, and European pioneer history.
The Dinosaur Park in Rapid City was dedicated on May 22, 1936. Being an elaborate example of roadside tourist sculpture, it contains seven dinosaur sculptures on a hill overlooking the city to capitalize on the then new tourists coming to the Black Hills to see Mount Rushmore.
